Avian Epiphany

I went out to Loch Raven Reservoir the other day. There was a Bird Convention: geese, ducks, seagulls. Thousands of them. They must have gathered in this one area near the bridge, since much of the reservoir was still covered in ice and snow.

In the midst of the cacophony of calls, one goose honked louder than the rest, his black-masked head bobbing violently with the effort. HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK!

I thought: Look at that, it just wants to say “I exist.”

Then came the epiphany: Don’t human beings do the same?
